Okay, this purely hypothetical so you don't even have to think that I've tried this because I most assuredly haven't, but... What if my hand weighed more than 4oz and was properly padded to be at least 16in on 2 axes... Then I could add courtesy padding to my forearm. The wrist would count as a hinge, right?
So I know the first thing most people are gonna bring up is: "IT'S A PUNCH WEAPON SINCE IT'S ON YOUR FIST!!!" I know how to fix this. I can, very simply mind you, just put my hand into the shape of, say... a duck beak. Then it's not a fist, right? See, problem solved.
Questions? Comments? Concerns [for my sanity]?

Let's see... I think I can fail it on all three of the Dag standards:
1) Safety While your arm may be padded and safe for striking, there have been examples of someone mis-blocking a weapon and snapping the core in half. Now, replace said core with your arm and you see my problem.
2) Playability With the added argument of "Where's the pommel?", it brings up an unnecessary gray area of "What would happen if you were hit in the courtesy padding on your arm/on your wrist?"
Also, it seems to me that even though the intent wouldn't be to use it as a punch-style weapon, it would be used as such more often than not, especially against a shield. Since a flail can't stab anyway...
3) Realism Yes, there are those martial artists who can use their fists as weapons, and even be deadly with them. However, it's not something that is inherently deadly in everyone (or anyone for that matter) unlike a sword, which is at least mostly deadly in anyone's hands.
(I'm pretty sure the OP was in jest, as was my response, mostly; I still wouldn't allow anything like it on the field)

Pommel: Pad the elbow.
Get hit in the courtesy padding: Scream real loud.
Is it a punch weapon: Not if there is no fist... Remember? Duck-shape? Booya.

If you made a duck shape with your hands then you could scream PECKING ORDER every time you hit some one if this where the case with every hit of every fight then i would approve of this *nods head*
